Northern Pike

Northern pike fishing around Munising offers an exciting opportunity to tangle with these toothy predators in the pristine waters of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Forget the heavily pressured waters of the south – here, you'll find pike in the back bays of Lake Superior and the numerous inland lakes dotting the landscape. Spring and early summer are prime time, as pike are actively feeding after spawning. Look for them in shallow, weedy areas near creek mouths or inlets. A local tip: try fishing the Au Train River near its mouth into Lake Superior; the weedy flats hold good numbers of pike. These pike are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are all effective. Don't forget a wire leader to prevent bite-offs! Be prepared for cooler water temperatures, even in summer, and consider using a fish finder to locate weed beds and structure that may hold pike.
