Northern Pike

Newberry, Michigan, provides a gateway to excellent Northern Pike fishing in the Upper Peninsula's freshwater lakes and rivers. Targeting Pike is best during the spring and fall, when water temperatures are cooler and the fish are more active. In the spring, focus on shallow, weedy bays where Pike spawn. In the fall, they move to deeper water near drop-offs and weed lines. The Tahquamenon River and the surrounding lakes are known Pike hotspots. A key local tip is to use large lures or baitfish to attract these ambush predators. Steel leaders are a must, as Pike have sharp teeth. Access to many of these areas is available via boat launches within Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Pike in this region can reach impressive sizes, with some specimens exceeding 40 inches. Be prepared for aggressive strikes and powerful runs!
