Northern Pike

Norton Shores is a great base for chasing northern pike in West Michigan. Muskegon Lake, with its weedy bays and shallow flats, is a prime location. Spring is an excellent time to target pike as they move into the shallows to spawn. As the water warms, focus on areas with submerged vegetation. Spinnerbaits, spoons, and large swimbaits are all effective lures. Fall is another productive time, as pike feed heavily before winter. A local tip: The Grand River, accessible a short drive south of Norton Shores, also holds a healthy population of pike. Launching from one of the public access points along the river will give you access to some excellent pike habitat. Keep an eye out for pike with distinctive markings, as the local population displays a variety of patterns. Remember to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have razor-sharp teeth.
