Northern Pike

Looking to tangle with some toothy Northern Pike near Ovid, Michigan? You're in luck! The area's network of smaller lakes and the Looking Glass River offer excellent pike habitat. Think weedy shallows, submerged timber, and areas where tributaries enter larger bodies of water. Spring, right after ice-out, is prime time, as pike move into these shallow areas to spawn. Fall is also excellent, as they aggressively feed to prepare for winter. For bank access, try the public access points along the Looking Glass River, particularly where it meanders through county land. If you have a boat, launch on one of the smaller local lakes; many have easily accessible ramps. A local tip: Pike in these waters can be quite wary, so consider using fluorocarbon leaders to reduce visibility. Also, be prepared for some heavy cover – weedless lures are your friend!
