Northern Pike

If you're after Northern Pike in the Reed City area, you'll find opportunities in the Muskegon River and its connected lakes and backwaters. While not necessarily known as a pike hotspot, these waters hold some decent-sized fish, often overlooked by anglers targeting trout and steelhead. Spring, just after ice-out, and fall, as the water cools, are prime times to target pike. Look for them in weedy bays, near submerged timber, and along drop-offs. Large spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and swimbaits are effective lures, as are dead bait rigs fished near the bottom. A public boat launch on the Muskegon River, just south of Reed City, provides good access. Be aware that the river can experience significant fluctuations in water levels, so check conditions before heading out. The pike here tend to be ambush predators, so focus your efforts on areas where they can easily conceal themselves.
