Northern Pike

For Northern Pike near Reese, Michigan, Saginaw Bay and its connected waterways offer some opportunities. While walleye dominate the bay's reputation, pike lurk in the weedy areas and backwaters. Spring, particularly after the ice melts, is a prime time as pike move into shallow bays to spawn. Look for them around emergent vegetation and flooded timber. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and jerkbaits are effective lures. The Saginaw River, which flows into the bay, can also hold pike, especially near its confluence with tributaries. Be aware of the strong currents in the river. Public boat launches are available in Bay City and along the river. A local tip: pay attention to water clarity, as the bay can become turbid after heavy rains. In stained water, use lures with bright colors and strong vibrations to attract pike. The pike in Saginaw Bay often exhibit a preference for larger prey, so don't be afraid to upsize your lure selection.
