Northern Pike

For Northern Pike enthusiasts visiting Saline, Michigan, the Huron River and its connected impoundments offer the best shot at hooking into these toothy predators. While not known as a pike fishing mecca, the Huron River system harbors a decent population of northerns, particularly in the weedy backwaters and slower-moving sections. Spring (especially after ice-out) and fall are the most productive times to target pike, as they are actively feeding before and after spawning. Try fishing with large spinnerbaits, spoons, or crankbaits near weed beds and submerged timber. Live bait, like suckers or shiners, can also be effective. A practical tip for the Huron near Saline: Focus on areas with current breaks and visible structure. Also, be prepared for the occasional muskie, as they are also present in the system. Pike in this area tend to be in the 2-5 pound range, but larger individuals are certainly possible.
