Northern Pike

Saugatuck might be better known for its trout and salmon, but the Kalamazoo River also harbors a healthy population of northern pike. These ambush predators thrive in the weedy backwaters and slower-moving sections of the river. Spring, just after the ice melts, and fall, as the water cools, are prime times to target pike here. Look for them near submerged vegetation, docks, and other structures where they can lie in wait for unsuspecting prey. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures, as are live or dead bait presentations. A good strategy is to explore the river by boat, casting to likely pike hideouts.
