Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike near Southfield requires venturing to some of the nearby lakes and waterways. While the city itself lacks substantial pike habitat, areas like the Detroit River and connected lakes (like Lake St. Clair, a short drive east) offer excellent opportunities. Pike fishing is best in the spring, shortly after ice-out, when they move into shallow bays and weed beds to spawn. Fall is another excellent time as they aggressively feed before winter. Look for areas with submerged vegetation, docks, and drop-offs. Large spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and jerkbaits are effective lures. A steel leader is essential to prevent bite-offs. A practical tip for fishing these waters: focus on areas where creeks or rivers enter the lake, as these often hold baitfish and attract pike.
