Northern Pike

If you're after Northern Pike in Southwest Michigan, Stevensville provides access to some promising waters. The St. Joseph River, with its slower-moving sections and backwaters, is a prime location. Inland lakes in Berrien County, like Paw Paw Lake, also offer pike fishing opportunities. These areas have abundant weed beds and submerged structure, ideal for pike ambush points. Spring (April-May) just after ice-out and fall (October-November) are the most productive times to target pike. As the water warms, they become more active and aggressive. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective, but don't underestimate the effectiveness of large dead bait under a bobber. A local tip: try fishing near the mouths of creeks entering the St. Joseph River, as pike often congregate there. Be prepared for some big fish; the St. Joseph River is known to hold some impressive pike. Always use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs from their razor-sharp teeth.
