Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike around Sunfield, Michigan, means exploring the Looking Glass River and the various smaller lakes and ponds dotting the landscape. These waterways offer the weedy, structure-rich environments that pike thrive in. Spring, right after ice-out, is an excellent time to target these predators as they become very active. Early fall, as water temperatures cool, is another peak period. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are all effective lures. If you prefer live bait, a sucker minnow under a bobber can be deadly. A good access point is the Portland State Game Area, which provides access to the Looking Glass River. Be prepared for some toothy critters; a wire leader is a must! The pike in this region aren't known for trophy sizes, but you'll find a healthy population of aggressive fish.
