Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike near Three Oaks, Michigan, requires a bit of exploration, but it can be worth the effort. The Galien River and connecting waterways can hold pike, especially in weedy areas or backwater sloughs. Spring and early summer, after the spawn, are excellent times to target them. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, or crankbaits are good choices, as are live or dead bait presentations. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs. A practical tip: focus on areas with slow-moving water and plenty of vegetation. Also, be aware that the river can be shallow in places, so a kayak or canoe might be a better option than a larger boat for accessing some areas.
