Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike near Troy, Michigan requires a bit of searching, but it can be rewarding. Focus your efforts on the Clinton River and the larger lakes and impoundments within the watershed. Pike prefer cooler water, so spring and fall are ideal times to fish for them. Look for weedy areas, drop-offs, and points where pike can ambush prey. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures. Don't be afraid to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs. A practical tip: the deeper sections of Stony Creek Metropark's lake can hold some surprisingly large pike. Be aware that pike fishing in this area is not as consistent as in more northern regions of Michigan, so be prepared to put in some time and effort. Also, pay attention to water clarity, as pike are primarily sight feeders.
