Northern Pike

Northern pike can be a thrilling target in the waters around Ypsilanti, particularly in Ford Lake and Belleville Lake, both connected to the Huron River. These lakes offer plenty of weedy areas and shallow bays where pike like to ambush their prey. Spring, just after ice-out, and fall, before the water gets too cold, are the most productive times to target pike. They move into the shallows to spawn in the spring and to feed aggressively before winter. For boat anglers, these lakes are easily accessible with several boat ramps. Shore anglers can try their luck around the edges of parks and public access areas. A local tip is to use large lures or live bait, like sucker minnows, to attract the attention of these predatory fish. Pike in this area can reach impressive sizes, so be prepared for a good fight. Wire leaders are essential to prevent bite-offs, as pike have very sharp teeth.
