Northern Pike

Targeting northern pike in Mount Vernon, Missouri, can be a challenging but rewarding endeavor. While not abundant, some of the larger lakes and reservoirs in the surrounding area hold populations of pike, offering a chance at catching a true predator. Spring and early summer, after the spawn, are the best times to target these fish, as they are actively feeding to regain their strength. Look for them in weedy areas, along submerged timber, and near creek channels. Large spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and swimbaits are all effective lures. A steel leader is essential to prevent bite-offs. Access to some of these waters may require a boat, so check for boat ramps and launch facilities beforehand. Pike in this region can be opportunistic feeders, so don't be afraid to experiment with different lure presentations and retrieves. Be patient, as pike fishing often requires covering a lot of water to find active fish.
