Northern Pike

Sunrise Beach, Missouri, offers a unique opportunity to tangle with Northern Pike in the Lake of the Ozarks. While not the first species that comes to mind for this destination, the lake's expansive weedy bays and submerged timber provide ideal habitat for these ambush predators. Spring, particularly after ice-out (if applicable), is prime time as pike move into shallower water to spawn. Fall is another excellent period as they aggressively feed before winter. A local tip: focus on the backs of coves and areas near creek channels entering the lake; these spots often hold the most forage. Look for stained water, as pike prefer lower light conditions. Large swimbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective, but don't overlook a well-presented dead bait under a bobber. Remember that pike in the Ozarks can be surprisingly large, so be prepared with tackle that can handle a trophy.
