Northern Pike

While Sylvania, Ohio, isn't known as a Northern Pike hotspot, dedicated anglers can find them in a few select locations. The key is to focus on larger bodies of water with weedy areas and plenty of forage fish. Some of the canals and larger ponds connected to the Ottawa River might hold pike, although they are not abundant. Look for areas with submerged vegetation, weed edges, and drop-offs. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and jerkbaits are classic pike lures. Fishing with dead bait under a bobber can also be effective. Spring (April-May) is often the best time to target pike as they move into shallower water to spawn. Another good time is the fall (October-November) when they are actively feeding before winter. A practical tip: be prepared for pike to be relatively sparse, so cover a lot of water and don't be afraid to experiment with different lures and techniques. Also, use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have very sharp teeth.
