Northern Pike

If you're after Northern Pike, La Crosse, Wisconsin, is a fantastic destination. The Mississippi River and its connected backwaters offer extensive pike habitat. Think weedy bays, slow-moving sloughs, and areas with abundant cover. The best times are spring and fall. Spring finds pike in shallow, weedy areas near spawning grounds, making them aggressive and accessible. Fall sees them actively feeding to prepare for winter. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures. Consider using a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have sharp teeth. A good starting point is the Black River, accessible from several public landings. Be aware that the current can be strong in the main river channel, so plan your approach accordingly. La Crosse pike can reach impressive sizes, with many exceeding 40 inches.
