Rainbow Trout

If you're chasing rainbow trout in southwest Colorado, Bayfield offers some fantastic opportunities. The Los Pinos River, flowing right through town, is a prime spot, as is Vallecito Reservoir just a short drive north. The river provides classic fly-fishing scenarios, with riffles, runs, and pools holding eager rainbows. Vallecito, on the other hand, is better suited for trolling or casting from the shore or a boat. Spring and fall are generally the best times to fish, as the water temperatures are more favorable, and the fish are actively feeding. In the summer, focus on early mornings or late evenings to avoid the heat of the day. A local tip for the Los Pinos: access is relatively easy along County Road 501, but be mindful of private property. The rainbows in this area tend to be wild and feisty, so be prepared for a good fight even from smaller fish. Also, be aware of potential runoff during the spring snowmelt, which can temporarily impact water clarity.
