Rainbow Trout

When anglers think of Durango, they often picture fly fishing for trout, and for good reason. The Animas River, flowing right through town, offers excellent rainbow trout fishing. The best time to target rainbows is typically from late spring through fall, avoiding the high runoff periods in early spring. The section of the Animas above Durango, particularly near the Oxbow Preserve, is a popular spot with good public access. Also consider the Florida River east of town. Rainbows in the Animas tend to be wild and eager to take a well-presented fly. Nymphing is often productive, especially with stonefly and mayfly imitations. A key to success is matching the hatch, so check local fly shops for the latest information. Be aware that the Animas can get crowded, especially on weekends, so consider fishing during the week or exploring less-traveled sections. A Colorado fishing license is required, and regulations regarding catch and release should be followed to help maintain this fantastic fishery.
