Rainbow Trout

For rainbow trout fishing near Longmont, you'll want to head towards the foothills and mountains west of town. While not directly in Longmont, the St. Vrain River and its tributaries offer decent opportunities for catching rainbows. Ponds and small reservoirs in the area, such as Button Rock Preserve (requires a permit), can also be productive. Spring and fall are ideal, with cooler water temperatures and active trout. Early morning and late evening often produce the best results. A local tip: the rainbows in these waters can be selective, so try using small nymphs and dry flies, especially during hatches.
