Rainbow Trout

While Airport Drive, Missouri, isn't exactly known as a rainbow trout hotspot, with a bit of a drive you can find some stocked streams and tailwaters that offer decent fishing. Bennett Spring State Park, Roaring River State Park, and Montauk State Park are all within a few hours' drive and are regularly stocked with rainbows. The cooler months, from late fall through early spring, are generally the best times to target these fish, as water temperatures are more favorable. A local tip: check the Missouri Department of Conservation's website for stocking schedules before you go. Small spinners, spoons, and PowerBait are effective for stocked rainbows. Don't overlook fly fishing either – nymphs and small streamers can be deadly, especially in the clearer tailwater sections. Rainbows in these areas typically range from 10-14 inches, although larger holdovers are sometimes caught.
