Rainbow Trout

If you're looking for rainbow trout in southern Missouri, Brandsville offers some surprisingly good options. While not as well-known as some of the larger Ozark streams, the smaller spring-fed creeks and tailwaters around Brandsville can hold decent populations of rainbows. The Eleven Point River, though a bit of a drive, is a renowned trout stream, and smaller tributaries closer to town are often stocked periodically. Spring and fall are prime times, as the water temperatures are ideal and the crowds are thinner than in the summer. For a local tip, try accessing some of the smaller creeks off Highway 63; many have public access points, but be prepared for some walking and possibly some brush. These fish can be a bit more wary than their stocked counterparts in larger rivers, so use lighter line and natural presentations. Don't overlook small nymphs and dry flies. The trout in these smaller streams tend to be wilder and more colorful, offering a rewarding experience for the patient angler.
