Rainbow Trout

While Cold Brook, New York, isn't known for massive Rainbow Trout, the smaller streams and tributaries in the area offer a chance to catch these beautiful fish in a classic Adirondack setting. These are often wild trout, or holdovers from stocking programs, that provide a rewarding experience for anglers who enjoy the challenge of small stream fishing. Spring and fall are the best times to target rainbows, as water temperatures are cooler and the fish are more active. Use light tackle and small flies, such as nymphs and dry flies, to imitate the local insect hatches. Access to many of these streams is via hiking trails, so be prepared for some walking. A local tip: check the DEC stocking reports to find recently stocked streams. Remember to practice catch and release to help maintain the population of these delicate fish.
