Rainbow Trout

While not a renowned trout destination, Hillburn, NY, provides access to some smaller streams and tributaries that can offer decent rainbow trout fishing, especially for anglers willing to explore. The Ramapo River, though more known for its bass, does hold some trout, particularly after stocking efforts by the DEC. Spring, immediately after stocking, is the most reliable time to catch rainbows. However, with some persistence, you might find holdover trout in the deeper pools even during the summer months. Small spinners, worms, and artificial flies are effective. Be aware that many of these streams are small and can be easily affected by rainfall, so check local conditions before heading out. Access can be tricky as much of the land is privately owned, so be sure to respect property rights and look for designated public access points. The trout found here are generally smaller, but the challenge of fishing these streams adds to the experience.
