Rainbow Trout

While Kaser, NY, might not be the first place that comes to mind for rainbow trout, you can find some surprisingly good fishing in the local streams that are stocked by the DEC. These streams, often smaller tributaries of larger rivers, offer a more intimate and challenging fishing experience than larger, more heavily fished waters. Spring and fall are the best times to target these rainbows, particularly after stocking events. Look for deeper pools, riffles, and runs. A variety of techniques can be effective, from drifting nymphs and dry flies to casting small spinners and spoons. Remember to check the DEC stocking reports to find out when and where trout have been released. A good starting point is the Popolopen Creek, which receives regular stockings. These rainbows are often relatively naive shortly after being stocked, but they quickly become more wary and selective. Adapt your tactics accordingly, and be prepared to experiment to find what works best.
