Rainbow Trout

While Liverpool isn't exactly a rainbow trout mecca, you can find some decent fishing opportunities within a reasonable drive. The Salmon River, a renowned steelhead and salmon river north of Syracuse, also holds a population of rainbow trout, especially during the spring and fall migrations. Smaller tributaries that feed into Oneida Lake and the Seneca River may also harbor stocked or wild rainbows. Spring and fall are the best times to target these fish, as they move upstream to spawn or are actively feeding. A key tactic is to use small spinners, spoons, or egg imitations in the faster-moving water. Access to the Salmon River is available through numerous public access points along its length. Be sure to check the DEC regulations for specific fishing seasons and size limits. Rainbow trout in this region are typically smaller than those found in the Great Lakes, but they can still provide a rewarding angling experience.
