Rainbow Trout

Margaretville, nestled in the Catskill Mountains, is a fantastic base for targeting Rainbow Trout in the East Branch of the Delaware River. This renowned river system boasts a healthy population of wild and stocked rainbows, offering a classic trout fishing experience. The best time to fish for rainbows here is during the spring and fall, particularly during the Hendrickson hatch in May and the streamer bite in October. The East Branch is a freestone river, so wading can be challenging, especially during high water. Focus on riffles, runs, and pools, and don't be afraid to experiment with different fly patterns and techniques. Access to the river is relatively good, with several public access points along Route 30. A local's secret: target the deeper pools during the warmer months, as the rainbows will seek refuge in the cooler water.
