Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout fishing near Nissequogue offers a unique freshwater angling experience. While Long Island isn't typically known for trout, select streams and ponds are stocked, providing opportunities for both stocked and holdover rainbows. Spring and fall are the best times to target these fish, particularly after stocking events. The Nissequogue River itself, while primarily a saltwater influenced system, does have some freshwater tributaries that could potentially hold trout. Smaller ponds managed by the DEC are your best bet. Look for areas with riffles, pools, and undercut banks. Fly fishing with nymphs and streamers can be effective, as can spin fishing with small spoons or spinners. Access can be a challenge, so research public access points beforehand. Be sure to check the DEC stocking schedules to maximize your chances. The trout here tend to be relatively small, but they are beautiful fish and can provide a fun challenge on light tackle.
