Rainbow Trout

The Oriskany area offers some promising freshwater trout fishing, particularly for rainbow trout. While Oriskany Creek itself holds some trout, expanding your search to the surrounding streams and rivers will greatly increase your chances of success. The Salmon River, a bit further north, is renowned for its fall steelhead (rainbow trout) run. However, closer to Oriskany, consider exploring smaller tributaries of the Mohawk River, which are often stocked with rainbows. Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) are prime times, with cooler water temperatures triggering feeding activity. Nymphing with small patterns or casting spinners can be productive. A local tip: Check the NYSDEC stocking reports to identify recently stocked streams. Also, be mindful of private property and obtain permission before fishing on private land. Rainbow trout in these smaller streams tend to be wild or holdovers from previous stocking, offering a rewarding challenge for anglers.
