Rainbow Trout

Poland, NY, offers some surprisingly good Rainbow Trout fishing in its local streams and tributaries that feed into the West Canada Creek. While not as famous as some of the larger rivers in the state, these smaller waters offer a more intimate and challenging angling experience. Spring is prime time, just after ice-out, when the trout are actively feeding. Fall, particularly September and October, is another excellent window as the fish prepare for spawning. A key to success here is stealth. These are often clear, shallow streams, so wear drab clothing and move slowly. Access can be found along some of the town roads that parallel the streams, but always be mindful of private property. A lightweight rod and reel with 4-6 lb test line is ideal, and small spinners, nymphs, and dry flies are all effective. The Rainbows here aren't huge, averaging 10-14 inches, but they're wild and feisty.
