Rainbow Trout

While Quogue might be better known for its saltwater fishing, don't overlook the opportunities for rainbow trout in the freshwater systems. The Peconic River, though a bit of a drive, is your best bet for finding stocked rainbows. Spring and fall are prime times, as the water temperatures are cooler and the trout are more active. The DEC stocks the river annually, so check their website for stocking dates and locations. Access can be tricky in some spots; look for designated access points along Edwards Avenue and Riverhead-Moriches Road. Be prepared for some competition from other anglers, especially right after stocking. A lightweight spinning rod with small spinners or spoons is a good starting point. Remember to check the current freshwater fishing regulations, as special rules may apply on certain sections of the river.
