Rainbow Trout

While Sagaponack is better known for its saltwater fishing, surprisingly good freshwater rainbow trout fishing can be found in the Peconic River system a short drive inland. This is not a trophy trout destination, but a great place for light tackle enthusiasts to enjoy wild and stocked rainbows in a scenic setting. Spring and fall are prime times, coinciding with stocking and cooler water temperatures that activate the trout. Focus on areas with good current and structure, such as fallen logs and overhanging vegetation. Access can be tricky as much of the land is private, but there are several public access points along the river, particularly near the Route 25 bridge. Be mindful of regulations regarding catch and release, as some sections may have specific rules to protect the trout population. Wading is possible in some areas, but be cautious of slippery rocks and varying water depths. Small spinners, dry flies, and nymphs are effective choices.
