Rainbow Trout

Chasing Rainbow Trout around Scotia, NY means exploring the local tributaries that feed into the Mohawk River. While the Mohawk itself isn't ideal trout habitat, several smaller streams offer a chance at these beautiful fish. Spring is undoubtedly the best time, especially after a few days of stable weather following the spring thaw. Look for stocked sections of the streams; the NYSDEC stocks regularly. Small spinners, worms, and trout magnets are effective. Later in the year, focus on deeper pools and shaded areas as water temperatures rise. Be aware that many of these streams are small and can be easily spooked, so stealth and light tackle are essential. A great access point is along some of the rural roads that cross these streams – look for pull-offs. The rainbows here are generally stocked fish, so don't expect huge sizes, but they're still a lot of fun to catch.
