Rainbow Trout

Scottsville sits conveniently close to several excellent Rainbow Trout streams. While the Genesee River itself isn't known for trout, nearby Oatka Creek is a renowned destination for both stocked and wild rainbows. Spring and fall are the prime times to fish Oatka Creek, with the spring offering the excitement of freshly stocked fish and the fall providing opportunities to target spawning-run browns and rainbows. For access, consider parking near the bridges along Oatka Trail. Wading is generally easy, but be careful of slippery rocks. The rainbows in Oatka Creek are typically in the 10-14 inch range, but holdovers can reach larger sizes. A local favorite tactic is nymphing with bead-head patterns in the deeper runs. Remember to check the DEC stocking schedule before your trip to maximize your chances of success.
