Rainbow Trout

If you're looking to hook into some rainbow trout in the Finger Lakes region of New York, the streams around Shortsville offer some fantastic opportunities. Many smaller tributaries feeding into Canandaigua Lake hold wild and stocked rainbows. Spring is prime time, as the trout are actively feeding after the winter and stocking efforts are in full swing. Fall is also productive, as the trout prepare for spawning. For access, try exploring the public fishing access points along Ganargua Creek; be sure to check the DEC's Public Fishing Rights maps. Remember that these are often smaller, more intimate streams, so stealth and a delicate presentation are key. Using light tackle and small nymphs or streamers can be very effective. The rainbows here aren't typically huge, but their vibrant colors and eagerness to strike make for a rewarding experience. Also, be mindful of water levels, as these streams can fluctuate quickly after rain.
