Rainbow Trout

While Unionville isn't directly on a major trout stream, it's within driving distance of some good rainbow trout fishing in the Catskill region. The Neversink River, a short drive west, is a renowned trout stream with stocked sections and wild populations. Focus on the upper reaches of the Neversink, above the reservoir, for the best rainbow trout fishing. Spring and fall are the prime times, with hatches of mayflies, caddisflies, and stoneflies providing excellent dry fly opportunities. Nymph fishing is also productive, especially in the deeper pools and runs. Access to the Neversink is generally good, with several public fishing access points along the river. Be aware of changing water levels, especially after rain, as the river can become turbid quickly. A 9-foot, 5-weight fly rod is a good all-around choice for this water. Check the current fishing regulations for the Neversink River, as special regulations may apply in certain sections.
