Rainbow Trout

While the Village of the Branch isn't exactly a trout mecca, dedicated anglers can find some limited rainbow trout fishing opportunities in the Nissequogue River, especially during and after stocking. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) typically stocks the river with trout in the spring. Check the DEC's stocking schedule for specific dates and locations. These stocked trout provide a fun fishing experience, particularly for beginners. Small spinners, spoons, and live bait like worms and mealworms are effective for catching these recently stocked fish. Fly fishing with nymphs and streamers can also be productive. A local tip: Focus your efforts in the deeper pools and runs, where trout tend to congregate. Public access to the river is available at various points, but be aware that the river can be shallow in some areas, making wading necessary. Keep in mind that the trout fishing in this area is primarily dependent on stocking, so the best time to fish is shortly after the fish are released. Because trout are stocked, they can be relatively naive to angling pressure.
