Rainbow Trout

While West Hampton Dunes is best known for its saltwater fishing, targeting rainbow trout requires venturing inland to the freshwater streams and ponds of Long Island. The Connetquot River State Park Preserve, a short drive north, is a prime location. This spring-fed river maintains a cool temperature ideal for trout, even during warmer months. Spring and fall are particularly productive, as trout are actively feeding and spawning runs occur. Access to the Connetquot River is controlled, requiring reservations and permits, which helps maintain the quality of the fishery. Consider using light tackle with small spinners, nymphs, or dry flies to entice these often selective trout. The rainbow trout here aren't known for their size, averaging 10-14 inches, but their vibrant colors and the pristine setting make for a rewarding experience. Be sure to check the DEC regulations for specific rules and seasons before heading out.
