Rainbow Trout

While not as widely known as some other Wisconsin regions, Antigo offers surprisingly good Rainbow Trout fishing opportunities. Several spring-fed streams in the area are stocked annually, providing anglers with a chance to hook into these colorful fighters. The best time to target Rainbows here is during the spring and fall when water temperatures are cooler. Focus your efforts on sections of the streams with good cover, such as undercut banks, overhanging vegetation, and rocky runs. Small spinners, spoons, and live bait like worms or crickets can be effective. Fly fishing is also popular, with dry flies and nymphs imitating local insects being productive choices. A local tip: Check the Wisconsin DNR stocking reports to identify recently stocked streams for the best chance of success. Be aware that many of these streams are relatively small and can be easily waded, but also sensitive to disturbance, so practice good stream etiquette and minimize your impact on the environment. Rainbows in these streams are typically in the 8-12 inch range, but larger holdovers are possible.
