Rainbow Trout

While Caledonia isn't typically known as a trout mecca, the Root River does offer a limited opportunity to target stocked rainbow trout. This is a put-and-take fishery, meaning the fish are stocked for anglers to catch, rather than relying on natural reproduction. The best time to target rainbows is shortly after stocking, which typically occurs in the spring and fall. Check with the Wisconsin DNR for stocking schedules. These trout are often concentrated in the areas where they are released, making them relatively easy to catch. However, they can become more wary as time goes on. Simple techniques like drifting worms or PowerBait under a bobber are effective. Fly fishing can also be successful, using nymphs and streamers. Access to the Root River is readily available along the Root River Parkway. Be aware of fishing regulations, including size and bag limits, which are strictly enforced. Rainbows in the Root River are typically smaller, but they provide a fun and accessible fishing experience for anglers of all skill levels.
