Rainbow Trout

While Delavan Lake is known for its panfish and largemouth bass, chasing Rainbow Trout requires exploring the surrounding smaller streams and spring-fed creeks that feed into the lake. These hidden gems, often overlooked, are where you'll find stocked and holdover rainbows. Spring and fall are prime times, as the water temperatures are cooler, and the trout are more active. Early morning and late evening are generally the most productive times. A practical tip: access to many of these streams is via county roads, so do your research and be respectful of private property. Small spinners, salmon eggs, or even a well-presented dry fly can be effective. The rainbows here tend to be on the smaller side, typically 10-14 inches, but their vibrant colors and willingness to take a fly make for an enjoyable experience.
