Rainbow Trout

While Edgerton isn't necessarily known as a premier trout destination, you can still find opportunities for Rainbow Trout within a reasonable drive. The Yahara River, though more known for its warm-water species, does receive some trout stocking in certain sections. For a more dedicated trout experience, consider heading west towards some of the smaller, spring-fed creeks in the Driftless Area. These streams offer a more classic trout fishing experience. Spring and fall are ideal, with cooler water temperatures making the trout more active. Look for deeper pools and undercut banks where trout like to hold. A local trick is to use small nymphs or dry flies that imitate the local insects. Be prepared for some wading, as access to these streams often involves navigating uneven terrain. Remember to check the Wisconsin DNR stocking reports for recent releases, and always practice catch and release to help sustain the trout population.
