Rainbow Trout

While Exeland, Wisconsin, isn't primarily known for its trout fishing, smaller, lesser-known streams in the surrounding area do hold populations of Rainbow Trout. These streams are often spring-fed and maintain cold, clear water throughout the year. Look for them in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Spring and fall are the most productive times to target these trout. During the spring, focus on areas near spawning habitat, while in the fall, look for trout feeding on insects and small baitfish. Access to these streams can be challenging, often requiring hiking through wooded areas. Be sure to obtain permission before fishing on private land. Consider using light tackle and small lures or flies, as the trout in these streams can be easily spooked. While you might not catch trophy-sized rainbows, the experience of fishing in these secluded streams is a reward in itself. Remember to practice catch and release to help maintain the trout population.
