Rainbow Trout

While not as renowned as some other Wisconsin locations for trout, Fort Atkinson still provides opportunities to chase rainbow trout. The nearby Whitewater Creek and some smaller tributaries to the Rock River are stocked with rainbows, offering a chance at some fast-action fishing. Spring and fall are the best times to target these fish, when water temperatures are cooler and the trout are more active. Fly fishing and light tackle spinning are both effective techniques. Look for trout in deeper pools and near riffles. A local angler's secret: try fishing the stretch of Whitewater Creek near the Kettle Moraine State Forest – Southern Unit; this area is less pressured and often holds some larger fish. Remember to check the Wisconsin DNR's stocking reports to see when and where trout have been released recently. Be aware that some areas may have special regulations, so consult the regulations booklet before heading out.
