Rainbow Trout

While Maple Bluff isn't primarily known for trout fishing, adventurous anglers can find opportunities for rainbow trout in some of the smaller streams that feed into Lake Mendota. These streams are typically best fished in the spring and fall when water temperatures are cooler. Look for areas with good cover, such as overhanging vegetation and undercut banks. Small spinners, spoons, or live bait (worms or insects) can be effective. Please note that these streams are often small and require careful wading and stealth. Before fishing, check the Wisconsin DNR regulations for specific stream closures or special regulations. A local tip: the Yahara River, as it enters Lake Mendota, can sometimes hold trout that have migrated from the lake. Be aware that access to some of these streams may be limited to public lands or require landowner permission. The rainbow trout in these streams are typically smaller, but the challenge of fishing small water can be very rewarding.
