Rainbow Trout

While not widely known as a trout destination, Merrimac, Wisconsin, does offer some opportunities for rainbow trout, primarily in the smaller, spring-fed creeks that feed into the Wisconsin River. These creeks are often overlooked, but they can hold surprisingly good numbers of trout, especially after stocking efforts. Spring and early summer are prime times, as the water is cooler and flows are higher. Look for trout in deeper pools and runs, especially near undercut banks and fallen logs. Access to these creeks can be challenging, as much of the land is private. However, some areas are accessible from road crossings or public land. Check local regulations regarding access and fishing licenses. A local tip: use small spinners or dry flies to entice the trout. The rainbows in these creeks tend to be on the smaller side, but they are wild and feisty, making for a rewarding fishing experience.
