Rainbow Trout

While Mukwonago isn't primarily known for its trout fishing, you can find Rainbow Trout in some of the area's streams and rivers that are stocked. The Mukwonago River and its tributaries receive periodic stockings, providing anglers with a chance to catch these colorful fish. Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) are generally the best times to fish for rainbows, as water temperatures are cooler and the fish are more active. Fly fishing with nymphs and dry flies can be effective, as can using small spinners or bait like worms or salmon eggs. A practical local tip: check the Wisconsin DNR stocking reports to see which streams have been recently stocked. Rainbows in these smaller streams may not reach trophy sizes, but they offer a fun and accessible fishing experience. Be mindful of private property and obtain permission before fishing on any land that is not publicly accessible.
