Rainbow Trout

Oxford, Wisconsin, might not be the first place that springs to mind for rainbow trout, but the area's small, spring-fed creeks and tributaries to larger rivers like the Wisconsin River offer surprisingly good opportunities. These streams, often overlooked, hold surprisingly healthy populations of rainbows, many of which are wild. Spring and fall are prime times to target these fish, as they become more active with the cooler water temperatures. Early morning or late evening are typically best. Access can be a challenge, as many of these streams cross private land, so be sure to respect property boundaries and seek permission where necessary. A good starting point is to explore the public access points along the Mecan River, a short drive from Oxford, known for its trout habitat improvement projects. The rainbows here tend to be on the smaller side, typically 8-12 inches, but their vibrant colors and eagerness to take a well-presented fly make them a rewarding target. Remember to check the Wisconsin DNR regulations for specific stream closures and size/creel limits.
