Rainbow Trout

Solon Springs offers some surprisingly good rainbow trout fishing, especially in the spring and fall. The key here is targeting the smaller, spring-fed creeks and streams that feed into Upper St. Croix Lake. These tributaries provide cooler, oxygen-rich water that rainbows thrive in, even during warmer months. While the St. Croix River itself holds some rainbows, the real gems are in these feeder creeks. Focus on areas with undercut banks, fallen logs, and riffles. Early morning and late evening are prime times, especially during the mayfly hatches in spring. A local tip: access to many of these creeks is easiest from the county roads that crisscross the area; look for small pull-offs and be prepared to wade. Remember to check the WDNR regulations for specific stream closures and size limits, as they can vary significantly. The rainbows here aren't huge, averaging 10-14 inches, but they're feisty and plentiful, offering a rewarding experience for fly anglers and spin fishermen alike.
